Artemisia afra

Artemisia afra is an indigenous plant of Southern Africa that grows mainly on the Cape Cederberg mountains. This soft aromatic shrub has masses of silvery-white leaves and sprays of yellow daisy flowers. Artemisia grows on damp slopes near streams and forest margins. It produces a sweet, woody essential oil with a strong resinous middle note when steam distilled from the naturally harvested flowers and leaves.

Artemisia Afra has insecticidal, antibacterial, anticholesterolemic, antipyretic, antiseptic, cholagogue, diuretic, purgative, and vasodilatory actions. It is also used for the treatment of gallbladder inflammation, diabetes, hepatitis, and jaundice. Artemisia Afra is a strong analgesic for rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia, menstrual pain, and a uterine and womb tonic that calms menopausal symptoms.

The merits of this oil

Artemisia is excellent for coughs, colds, fevers, croup, whooping cough, and unclogs phlegm and mucous from the respiratory tract.

Used in steam inhalation, Artemisia is excellent for chest colds, bronchitis, blocked noses, and sinus pain. 

A couple of drops in steaming water soothes the chest with healing vapours that unclog phlegm and inflammation.  

It is a strong antibiotic and analgesic oil with pain calming substances that numb pain. This calms cramping muscles, rheumatism, neuralgia, and arthritis.

The antiseptic substances disinfect and soothe piles, insect bites, and sores.

Disinfects foot odour with anti-fungal substances for athlete’s foot.

Calms irregular, sore or obstructed menstruation and could be included in massage blends for menstrual pain.

Artemisia is a uterine and womb tonic that calms menopausal symptoms.  

It has actions for hypertensive ailments with substances that calm blood pressure by relaxing the veins and arteries. This could help to reduce the risk of heart strokes and atherosclerosis.
