Acorus calamus

Calamus inhabits marshes and has strappy green leaves and yellow cone flowers. Its pungent roots are harvested, and steam distilled to make a warm sweet, soft, woody pure essential oil with clove-type notes. It is an excellent aromatic stimulant and tonic. Calamus stimulates appetite, calms ulcers, gas, upset stomach, colic, arthritis, headache, improves cognitive ability, memory, hemorrhoids, and skin ailments.

It has antioxidant, hypotensive, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-depressant, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory, anxiolytic, hypolipidemic, antispasmodic, antidiarrheal, stomachic, tonic actions. While whole Calamus root is edible, the essential oil causes seizures and delirium if ingested.
